If building more university facilities leads to higher enrollments, efforts will need to be made to ensure that high schools are educating more college-ready applicants. More innovation, more charters, more new schools needed there. See www.scienceandtech.org.

Thank you for a cogent and convincing argument for funding our university research programs. We should do what we can to make this argument with our representatives in Washington and in our state legislatures. Whether urban universities in large cities or small private colleges in rural towns, the economic impact of these schools is meaningful, and this article shows how that impact can be multiplied to achieve several economic and cultural objectives quickly.

Adam,

I am hearing very positive reports on your plan. As Graham Greene wrote, "once in awhile a door opens and the future comes in." You are opening a door to prosperity as well as a door to equality through educational attainment. The leverage is remarkable as is the opportunity to build significant, sustainable infrastructure.

Adam:

Thank you for taking the lead on this issue. Your work with so many of the top institutions of higher learning puts you in a unique position to mobilize the charge. Just yesterday (the same day I reviewed the complete report) I used it in a discussion we were having during an accreditation working group meeting. UA is undergoing a 10 year NCA accreditation this year. My working group is focused on whether the University has sufficient resources, both physical, human, and financial to support our mission and the aspirations of the citizens of Arizona. Your paper provoked a deep and fruitful discussion, and I thank you for that. Clearly, the value of higher education touches all, and touches them significantly. Accreditations tend to be very formulaic, but this one could be a great opportunity for us to rethink the way we view ourselves.
